Brothers,

As reported in many media outlets including the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail, Brother Otto Jelinek of Alpha Chi Chapter passed away on September 5, 2026. There will be a private family funeral for Brother Jelinek and a celebration of life will follow at a later date as per his Obituary found at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home in Oakville, ON.

Brother David Myers of Alpha Chi Chapter says this of Brother Jelinek:

Otto Jelinek was a brother in Alpha Chi. He went to Appleby College for primary school and Oakville Trafalgar High School, which is where he became a member of our Fraternity.

Although I never met Otto, I did follow his political and business career over the years, I do have two stories regarding him.

The Myers Oakville home was two hundred yards west of Appleby College. My brother Tony, AX 149, had a Globe and Mail route, which included Appleby College. He and I would get up at 6:00 am every morning, pick up the papers, and deliver them to all the boys in the dormitories. Although I have no evidence that we delivered to him, I suspect we did.

The Globe and Mail Obituary about Otto, talks about him starting a company called Canadian Skate Industries. That company made hockey and figure skates on Speers Road in Oakville. Interesting enough, when I was in high school, and before I became a member of the Fraternity, my high school girlfriend got me a summer job there packaging hockey and figure skates. As employees of the company, we received a discount on any products we purchased. Needless to say I purchased my first brand new pair of skates from his company, which was a far cry better than the hand-me downs I always got from my older brothers.

Otto was a colourful figure, as were many brothers of Alpha Chi, however we were proud to have a Olympic Champion, Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister and a Canadian Ambassador in our Chapter.
