Brothers,

Brother Ron Hurst contacted me via Facebook from his home in Williamsburg to notify me of the passing of Brother Bob Hammersley on Friday January 3. Bob was a long time resident of the Manassas, VA area and had recently moved to Efland NC to be closer to family.  He was a founding member of Gamma Nu chapter and lived in Pohick Woods during his Hayfield HS days. He was instrumental in having the Fairfax Co. School Board allow our chapter to exist when many secret societies were not.

Funeral arrangements can be found at the Clements Funeral Service’s website at:

An informal celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025 from 2-4 PM at The Colonial Inn in Hillsborough, NC (153 W King St, Hillsborough, NC 27278).

Fraternally,
Brother Kevin Stockdale
Gamma Nu #1C

In an email to his fellow Gamma Nu Brothers Brother Kevin shared a memory of Brother Bob…

“I wonder who else was with me and Bob, back in the Crescent Club days, parked on Fort Belvoir at the Riot Village enjoying a “golden beverage” when the MP’s showed up. Being on the HHS Cross Country team paid off for him!”

…and Brother Larry Uhlfelder, Gamma Nu #11 replied…

“So sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I was there that night – was driving my Mom’s blue 1969 Plymouth Belvedere. We had made a run earlier in the evening to Meades liquor store in DC. We were cruising around looking for a place to drink – someone suggested we go to the “riot village” at Ft. Belvoir (a mock up of a city used to train for crowd control). We thought because it was kinda isolated would be a good place to consume some cold ones. I still remember my state of shock when the MPs rolled up on us – had visions of being arrested and my Mom’s car being impounded. When the MPs rolled up Bob took off like a rabbit – he was an excellent track/cross country runner! Kevin I remember you were there – I also seem to recall Ralph Little and two others – guessing it was either brothers Gogan, Ingle or Tuohy – all likely suspects.

We were fortunate that the MPs showed us mercy and just made us pour out our beer. If memory serves, when Bob took off he grabbed a bag with two six-packs in it. After the MPs let us go, it took us a while to find Bob. We were all walking around yelling “Hammersley.” When we finally connected, Bob still had the beer – and he was damn proud of that!

If you get more information – obituary/arrangements/ family wishes, please let me know. I would like to make a contribution in memory of Bob. We spent a lot of days together running the Hayfield track. Sadly we are now another man down.

Stay strong brothers.”
