Brothers,

I am sad to report to the Brotherhoods the news of the passing of Brother Larry Minter. Bro. Larry was Bro. Number 47 in Beta Alpha Chapter of GAMMA DELTA PSI Fraternity at Hopewell High School in Virginia. He had lost his beloved wife several months earlier. Bro. Larry courageously battled cancer over the past year. This is the email he sent to me when he received his cancer diagnosis:

“Hey Brother Dorsey. Had my follow up visit with surgeon and was told I now have an aggressive and rare cancer called Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma. Radiation and chemo to follow. Please keep me in your prayers Brother.

Bro. Larry.”

He and I talked on the phone for an hour on the day he died, Sat. Nov. 30th. We reminisced and laughed and focused on earth shaking topics such as where a person could find the best hotdogs in Hopewell back in the 1950’s. After many comparisons with other less worthy hotdog candidates we concluded that the steamed pork hot dogs from Rafey’s Pool Hall were the best. We both concluded that we would give anything just to taste one of them again.

Bro. Larry Minter was very active in the Episcopal Church where he held many lay positions as vestryman in multiple churches over the years

Playing golf was Larry’s passion in life. I was amazed when he told me that he had played golf a short time after having undergone an extensive cancer procedure.

Larry was generous to a fault. He would literally give you the shirt off of his back. He was full of fun always energetically finding new ways to engage in social activity. He loved to laugh and to make people laugh.

Larry and I were school mates, fellow football players for the Hopewell Blue Devils, and more importantly we were friends. Our friendship was taken to another level because we were Gamma Delta Psi fraternity brothers as well.

Every time I think of Bro Larry, I smile. He had the natural ability to elevate a persons spirit every time he met them. I miss him more than I can say. God’s Blessings on you, Larry. May your journey into our Nirvana Chapter be filled with laughter as you meet the Brothers who have gone before us.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 1 – 3 pm at Victoria Golf Club 4086 Poorhouse Rd Victoria, VA 23974 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/YZEHMKonfjALqQWz9)
