Brothers,
Brother Harry Oswin (Gamma Alpha #17) recently announced the passing of Brother Larry Love (Gamma Alpha #2C) on June 10, 2026 in Peterborough, ON. Brother Larry was a founding member of Gamma Alpha Chapter and helped initiate the famous Y-Knot Coffeehouse back in the 1960s. Brother Love practised law in Peterborough for many years. He was pre-deceased by his wife Marion, who passed in 2024. A private family service is planned. There is no public funeral or obituary as per his wishes.
Here is what Brother Harry wrote on Facebook about his friendship wit Brother Larry:
I first Met Larry Love when I was pledging for Rexdale’s Gamma Alpha Chapter of Gamma Delta Psi Fraternity International. He was one of the brothers who helped get the Y-Knot coffee house going back in 1966. Larry was full of fun and always good for a laugh. One time in Mr. Tom Strong’s history class Larry noticed that Mr. Strong had a habit of pushing up his glasses while he spoke, so Larry organized a lottery. Most of the class threw in a dime and at the end of history class, the winner won the pot. Didn’t take Mr. Strong very long to smell a rat, so to speak, when one prospective winner would yell with glee, while the loser would groan loudly. At one point, Mr. Strong even said: “is it something I do?, as he nervously pushed his glasses up multiple times, causing yells and groans across the room!
Another time, on Halloween, I took a date to a Halloween party. We both dressed as Romans in togas, and we arrived at the party in my ‘58 VW bug. When we came out at the end of the party, my Beetle was filled to the brim with pumpkins. There, laughing nearby, was Larry and a couple of pals. Turns out, that the local grocers gave pumpkins away after 9 on Halloween and Larry had a brainstorm!
I lived in a basement apartment on Redwater Dr. It had its own entrance, bathroom and could easily sleep 3 or 4 people. During my TCI years about 6 different pals stayed at my place. My Mom was okay with this, because she didn’t want “strays” out on the street with no place to stay. One time Larry asked if he could stay and he stayed with us for about a year. No questions were asked. He stayed until he and Marion (his wife) got married! I was a member of their wedding party.
Larry and Marion moved to Lindsay to run the Family Hardware business. I moved out west for 20 years and our friendship waned.
Got a surprise call from Larry in October, 2024, proposing that we meet up at a fraternity shindig that was being held; so we did.
Even though it had been decades, it was as if we’d only been out of touch a week or so! Larry studied law and became a lawyer in Peterborough. This was not surprising. He was smart as hell! Tons of laughs, memories and fun. Toward the end of the night, Larry told me that Marion, his funny, beautiful, lovely Marion, was in the late stages of Alzheimer’s and that she wouldn’t be long for this world. She passed about two weeks later.
Larry and I stayed in touch. I called once in a while, we’d meet for lunch every 3 or 4 months and we had this running gag where we’d send texts back and forth from late ‘84, until last week.
Got a funny text from Larry week ago Sunday. Sent one back. I hadn’t heard back by mid week, so I sent him another. I try not to be a pain in the ass, so I waited. On Saturday morning, I got a phone call from Larry’s son advising me that Larry had passed away the previous Wednesday and that, as he was going through his Dad’s things, he came across our texts on his phone!
If you know me, even a little, you know that I’ve dealt with lots of loss in my life, but this one hurts, my friends! The best thing you can do when you lose someone, is remember them and that’s what I’m doing here.
Call that pal or family member, let them know you care. You’ll be glad you did.
