The following is eulogy for Brother Wayne for this Nirvana Chapter listing from Brother Johnnie Smith, Beta Psi Chapter.

Wayne Markland, Beta Alpha # 161.

I first met Wayne when he was a “Goat ” on a Saturday morning in downtown Hopewell. As was the custom the Goats had to report to the members and give them gum, run errands and preform other tasks. He reported to me and I had to tell him since I was in another chapter (Beta Psi) he didn’t have to do anything but give me gum or run and get me a soda. I did give him one bit of advice, that being to learn the History of GDP. A few weeks later he reported to me again and handed me a short but concise History of GDP. I knew then he would become a leader in his chapter.

Over the next 55 years or so we had many adventures together one being looking for party materials with a young Canadian Brother Mike Kuch. I’ll be honest we were having a few Golden beverages and Wayne decided to pour a beverage over my head, and of course I retuned the favor. I looked in the back seat and I swear the young Brother was trying to jump out the moving car.

I would from time to time see Brother Markland on the road delivering for UPS. When he retired from them he started his business “Custom Book Binders” and another side business “Wayne Markland Entertainment” He promoted East Coast Beach Music concerts with bands like Tower of Power, Chairman of The Board, Band of Oz , The Tams and many others. By staying in touch with him was a advantage because I never had to buy a ticket and was able to go back stage and drink FREE BEER.

His father Earl, mother Eda Mae. brother Tom all went before him and sadly his sister Sharon passed the same day he did. And then there is JANIE the love of his life who was by his side for the last 4 years or so taking care of him, laughing with him, crying with him, praying with him and just loving him. Janie and I would like to see as many GDP Brothers as possible at his service on 8/10/24 at Enon Baptist Church at 11am .

We have lost a Brother, Nirvana chapter has gained one. “Once a Brother Always a Brother ”
